Direct Spore Drop into the Keepers Brew!
Last updated 02/18/10

Two Keepers' Brew with the purchase of a MGK Kit!
Also can be purchased in liquid for Spore Syringe injection.

Materials Needed

Keepers Brew - Powder and Marble
91% Alcohol
Water Incubator
A Zip Lock Sandwich Baggie
Plastic or metal lid w/hole
Screen
Spring or Mineral Water
Masking Tape
Small Bowl or Saucer
Pressure Cooker
Poor Boys Glove Box

MUSHROOM CAP (Cap only...no stem) on a piece clean wax paper.

Prepare the screen.

Note the nice and straight screen.

Bend it like you see to the right.

The screen needs to be bent so it will snugly wedge itself underneath the lid.  It should not wiggle or be able to easily slipped-out.

Gently remove the screen (without distorting it's new 'bent' shape) and place it into the Glove Box and into a small awaiting bowl/saucer of 91% Alcohol.

And away we go!!!!!

Fill your 1/2-pint jar slightly over 100ml with Mineral or Spring Water.

Stir until powder is dissolved (do not remove the marble).

This will give you about 10 syringes (12cc each) of Spore Keepers Brew solution.  Enough to inoculate 120 1/2-pint jars of substrate.....OH YEAH!  What this means is that each 12cc syringe is capable of doing 120 jars if you only put one drop in each substrate jar from the syringe. So, if you have 10 syringes, each one is able to inoculate 120 jars (half pint jars, of course)... then you should be able to get easily over 1000 jars of substrate for each full jar of spore Keepers Brew.

Screw down the lid (note the hole) onto the jar.  Make sure it is snug but DO NOT 'CRANK' THE LID DOWN!  The plastic/metal lid will expand slightly during the sterilization process, within the pressure cooker, so over tightening is not RECOMMENDED.

Place TWO pieces of masking tape over the hole.

I like to fold the end of the tape so it will be easier to remove later.

Place the jar into the pressure cooker.
FOR GOD SAKES MAKE SURE YOU POUR ABOUT 1" OF TAP WATER ONTO THE BOTTOM OF THE PRESSURE COOKER!!!!!  You would be surprised the amount of people that do not do this....DAMN!  Please read the operation manual that comes with your pressure cooker.

Cook the jar for 30 minutes at 15 psi (45 min at 10 psi)

Do not start the 'clock' until the pressure cooker gage 'rattles' for the first time.  Please read the operation manual that comes with your pressure cooker. (I said it 2x's now...that means READ IT!!!!)

After you turn off the cooker (30 minutes later) and the pressure in the cooker has returned to normal (room pressure) place the HOT jar into the running prepared Glove Box and allow the jar/Brew to completely cool.

Using the Glove Box...allow the jar to cool for at least one hour before going to the next step.

Loosen your lid so it can be lifted easily off of the jar of Brew!
BUT DO NOT REMOVE IT!

All of the following steps should be done within the Glove Box (just a friendly reminder).

Note:  I will substitute a 'nickel' in place of a mushroom cap.
This is a prop only.

Make sure you submerse the screen into alcohol for at least a few seconds and get your mushroom cap.

Take out the screen and gently shake the excess alcohol back into the bowl/saucer.

Place the mushroom cap onto the screen GILLS DOWN and if you need to sit the screen and cap down...make sure you place it back onto the wax paper.

Lift the lid off of the Brew and carefully wedge the screen (with mushroom cap) underneath the plastic lid.  Can you see the mushroom cap (nickel)?

MAKE DAMN SURE THAT THE GILLS OF THE MUSHROOM ARE FACING DOWNWARD!!!!  The spores will drop down and directly onto the surface of the Brew.

Note: Be careful NOT to touch the underside of the plastic lid or the rim of the jar.
And make damn sure you do not EVER have your hands, or anything else, overtop the exposed Brew while you are wedging the screen into place.

Here is the tricky part.

Carefully place the lid over the rim of the jar.
DO NOT TURN THE LID ONTO THE JAR.
Instead you are going to turn the JAR until the lid
CATCHES THE THREADS and BEGINS too tighten.

TURN OFF THE GLOVE BOX AND DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING!!!
DO NOT OPEN THE BOX OR TURN THE FAN BACK ON FOR 24 HOURS!

If you twist the lid too much onto the jar you may bend the screen and all might just fall into the Brew...ruining all!

Allow the jar to sit for 24 hours
within the Glove Box!

You will notice a light to dark spore print floating on the surface of the Brew Solution afterwards.  That is the 'magic' my friends!

Squirt the filter once with Lysol and turn the Glove Box back on.

Now CAREFULLY turn the JAR away from the lid.  Move the lid, screen and cap away from the jar (so nothing falls into it by mistake) and remove the screen and mushroom cap and replace the lid BACK onto the jar...and tighten the lid snugly.  Take off the old piece of Masking tape and replace it with a fresh piece.  Place the entire jar carefully into a
Zip Lock Sandwich Baggie.

You can now remove the Keepers Brew (within the Baggie...of course).

Now you are to vibrate the jar in order too 'break-up' the spores into the Brew...dispersing the spores thoroughly. (DO NOT SHAKE IT!!!!)

Set the Water Incubator to 86F and place the NEW spore infested Keepers Brew into it for 3 days.  You are to swirl the Brew every chance you get while it is staying snug and warm in the incubator (at least 3x's a day).

After 3 days you can use the Brew or keep it in your refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

When you are ready to use the spore solution all you will need to do is place the jar into a working Glove Box and, with a clean syringe, suck out one cc for every 1/2-pint jar you would like to inoculate.  Keep the Keepers Brew in a refrigerator for as long as necessary.

Here is a link that will assist you with extracting the processed Keepers Brew.

Warning!!!

I am not sure how long the Brew will last in the refrigerator.  What tends to happen is that the spores will grow so large within the Brew that you might not be able to 'suck-up' the solution.  So...use the Brew within 6 months if possible.
