Building a Drying Chamber

What is the point of growing a lot of mushrooms if you can't dry the extra and store them for later study?
Here is a very inexpensive way to dry mushrooms and keep the desired traits that we are love.

Materials needed:

1/4 inch wire mesh - Hardware Store
Clean wash cloth or rag.
Carton of Damp-Rid or Damp-be-Gone (Anhydrous calcium chloride) - Hardware store
Medium or Large size Tupperware bowl with sealing lid.

Tools:

Sheet Metal Scissors - Hardware Store

How it works...

Calcium Chloride pulls the moisture out of the air.  This moisture will collect on the bottom and be discarded after each drying process.

Cut a circular piece of wire mesh to fit about 3" from the bottom.  If need be, reinforce it with any object that will not decompose do to the water collecting on the bottom of the Tupperware.

Lay the clean cloth on the mesh screen like you see here.

Pour about a 1/2" of Calcium Chloride (Damp Be Gone) onto the cloth and spread it out evenly. Keep it neat and away from the walls of the container.

Cut yet another circular wire mesh to fit about a 1" above the Calcium Chloride (does not have to be exact...just do not lit your mushrooms touch the stuff...trust me...it will taste awful).

That is all there is to it!   Pop the lid on and you have yourself a nice little drying chamber!  Just big enough for some goodies you have growing on top of your refrigerator or in your closet!

Important!

If you do want to deal with building a Drying Chamber this is what you can do....

Any floor fan can be used.
Sit the mushrooms on some newspaper in front of the fan.
Turn the fan on low and come back in about a day.

Place the mushrooms in a baggie and KEEP YOUR EYE ON THEM!
If you see ANY moisture forming in the baggie, open the baggie IMMEDIATELY and allow the mushrooms to air out for a few more hours.
